New Shoot for Chicago Magazine

Angel Otero is an art star on the rise.  Not yet out of graduate school,  Angel is getting regular foot traffic from collectors and museum curators in his 10x10 foot studio space at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  His paintings are being exhibited at the NEXT art fair in Chicago and will likely make a few more sales there. Art Director, Jennifer Moore.

Saverio shoots for Discover Magazine

For their Darwin anniversary issue, Discover Magazine photo editor, Rebecca Horne commissioned Saverio for portraits of the famous molecular biologist, Dr. Sean B. Carroll.  Dr. Carroll is a world leader in the field of evolutionary development which studies how mutations of genes drive evolutionary change.  For example, how white mice living on a lava flow eventually evolve to become black, or even what causes the development of an entirely new species. Their shoot took place in the basement of his lab at the University of Wisconsin where he's is a professor of molecular biology and genetics.

PDN: Measuring the risk

PDN (Photo District News) printed Saverio’s work in a December feature where they ask prominent art buyers, “What was the best creative risk you took in 2008?”  Senior Art Producer, Liz Miller-Gershfeld at Energy BBDO talked about two projects Saverio produced for the Art Institute of Chicago promoting their Edward Hopper and Cartier Bresson exhibits.  About choosing Saverio, Miller-Gershfeld said, “…we knew from working with [Saverio] previously that he has a strong ability to take each project on its own merit, and to solve the puzzle from a cohesive conceptual and technical perspective.”  You can read the article here.  Interview by Rachel Hulin.

Cold Cream

In the January 2009 issue of PDN, the magazine wrote about why Saverio was chosen by Story Worldwide Photography Director, Moya McAllister and photo editor, Dan Golden to shoot a cover for Compass MagazineCompass is a custom publication for United Postal Service (UPS) designed by Story Worldwide's New York office.  Saverio photographed Dippin' Dots company founder Curt Jones at his Paducah, KY factory.

While playing with liquid nitrogen, Jones made a fun discovery. He could create colder than cold, beaded ice cream that would later make millions of tongues numb and happy.  Dippin’ Dots can now be shipped in super cold boxes by UPS straight to your 5 year old's 6th birthday party.

Time Out Cover

The mechanical bull is a nearly extinct beast now-a-days. John Travolta made it famous in the 70's film, Urban Cowboy, but it's not enjoyed as much popularity since.  Time Out Chicago's Stephaine Gladney and Martha Williams commissioned Saverio to shoot the cover for their 2008 weddings issue subtitled, Buck Tradition. See the blog for photos of Saverio and the crew on the bull.

New shoot for Time Magazine

Buell  is known to be Harley Davidson's wild child. They are a boutique, sport motorcycle brand owned by Harley, manufacturing in Troy, Wisconsin.  Buell competes successfully with the pricier Ducati's of the world and especially so with their new liquid cooled 1125R.  Saverio photographed Eric Buell with some of his design and production team for Time Magazine photo editor, Bill Carwin.  You can read the story here.

Peddling Henri Cartier-Bresson.

Saverio shot an ad for the Art Institute of Chicago's Henri Carter-Bresson show.  The Energy BBDO team of: Todd Hoffman, Jessica Campbell, Mike McQuade, Laura Ricardo, and Marzena Grecki joined his team at the museum VERY EARLY in the morning to get their shooting done before visitors flooded in at 10:30am.  The art direction considers Cartier-Bresson's work as imagined in Chicago. Afterwards, Saverio said, "I was thrilled to study his work again and  to solve the puzzle of re-presenting Cartier's work in my own town."  Photos from the shoot are HERE.

Inc. Magazine-SuccessStory

It's a little innappropriate to bring up the TV series The Office when getting a tour of the Jack Millers company headquarters. You know Jack's company, Successories for the motivational posters that dot the set of that show. Actually none of those prints are Jacks, but instead cheap immitations. This however may bode well for Sucessories which is reinventing itself with a $400K website rehab and looking for a younger audience. Maybe irony can inspire productivity, so Jack, think casual Friday T-shirts!

Best of, Pork?

A favorite image of mine of dazed and reflective farm girl and her prize-winning porker rests on the cover of the current  Oxford American Magazine.  Their third annual Best of the South issue includes an insiders guide to prison food and odes to the best of vandalism and daiquiris.  Oxford American Magazine is a not-for-profit literary and culture journal of the University of Central Arkansas. Little do those genteel southerners know, that pig lives in Chicago. Oink!

Summer Slam!

I recently did a particularly physical shoot for Chicago Magazine's photo editor, Todd Urban. Todd asked me to photograph wrestling's  World Heavyweight Champion, CM Punk. I shot Punk sunning his pecs at the beach, and for some girl power, invited Playboy Magazine model, Danielle Fornarelli to join in. Special thanks to stylist Angela Finney and Lilly the Chihuahua.

Can't steer me wrong

Dogs are great and I own a couple of cats, but the next big fish in pet ownership is Hereford; That's Hereford cow.  I had a great week working with Manny Bautista, Jonas Amoss and Renee Kutner of Atlanta's Fitzgerald and Company on a new ad for Cryovac. Cryovac is a leading international food packaging company based in South Carolina. Here you see me and Dylan chumming it up after his big shoot.  Dylan lives two hours south of Chicago and loves to lay in his stall, eat his cud and urinate on set.

Cover of AtEdge

I was honored that Serbin Communications, publisher of the new and very cool photography source book AtEdge, asked to use my photograph on the cover and verso of their book.  More of my work appears inside on pages 34-35. AtEdge Microview 19 is distributed to advertising agencies and design firms nationwide April 2008.

Nighthawks spoofed, again and again

Almost better known than the  Edward Hopper masterpiece which it spoofs,  a small print of Gottfried Helnwein's painting, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 1987 hangs quietly in the corner of Johnny’s Grill in Chicago. Helnwein replaced the three iconic diner patrons and soda jerk with: Humphrey Bogart, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and Elvis Presley.   Energy BBDO art director, Steve Denekas and I chose Johnny's as the location to create our own spoof of Hopper's, Nighthawks at the Diner, 1942 for it's striking resemblance to Helnwein's, or rather Hopper's famous painting.  The image was used to promote the Art Institute of Chicago's Hopper exhibit.

Steppenwolf directorial debut

Saverio was invited by the Steppenwolf Theater to participate in their contribution to the 365 Days/ 365 Plays International Festival. He both directed and produced Seven-Eleven, a play by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Susan-Lori Parks. You can watch it here.

Reality Photography!

I was asked to appear on the BET reality show, College Hill Interns to help the "Blue Team" beat the "Red Team" in their final challenge of the series. The challege was to concept, and produce a Toyota print ad in 5 days. The winning team's ad would run in Complex Magazine. Team members produced nearly everything from casting, location scouting, styling, to the craft service. I offered a little guidance and showed up with my crew to shoot. Tune-in to the eighth episode on BET online  to see who wins. OK. Spoiler. The "Blue Team" wins! This ad ran and I am now accepting scripts.

A Character Campaign

Saverio recently completed a 7 image campaign for CNA Insurance that will begin this fall. The campaign, headed up by creative, Brian Riley of Magnani involved the concept of odd partnerships. Cast talent included, birdwatchers, urban cowboys, pirate children, a Great Dane and two small white rabbits.
